Appliance fire-safety basics

Good maintenance and attention to abnormal heat, smell and electrical behaviour matter more than trying to diagnose a fire-risk fault at home.

High-value habits

  • Follow the manufacturer installation and maintenance instructions.
  • Keep dryer lint filters and approved exhaust paths maintained.
  • Do not ignore scorching, hot plugs/sockets, arcing/crackling sounds or repeated protective-device operation.
  • Avoid improvised extension/adaptor arrangements for large appliances when installation instructions call for a suitable fixed outlet.
  • Register appliances and check official recall information.

Dryer airflow is a safety issue

Restricted lint/vent airflow can increase drying time and heat. Clean the lint filter as instructed and maintain the venting system.
