Electrical basics for appliance owners
Understand the language and red flags without turning a troubleshooting page into unsafe live-electrical instructions.
Breaker, fuse, RCD and GFCI: different jobs
A circuit breaker/fuse primarily protects wiring against excessive current. RCD/GFCI-type protection is designed to reduce electric-shock risk from certain leakage/fault conditions. A protective device repeatedly operating is evidence to investigate—not an invitation to keep resetting it.
Homeowner-safe observations
- Is the appliance plug/cable visibly damaged, scorched or unusually hot?
- Is the outlet/switch visibly damaged or loose?
- Did the protective device trip at the same point in the cycle?
- Does the appliance share an extension lead or overloaded adaptor? Large appliances should normally follow their dedicated installation instructions.
What this guide does not ask you to do
- Do not remove covers to access live mains wiring.
- Do not bypass door switches, interlocks, thermal cut-outs, fuses, RCD/GFCI protection or grounding/earthing.
- Do not repeatedly re-energise a circuit that trips.
- Do not use a meter on live appliance internals unless you are trained/competent and following appropriate service procedures.
Immediate stop-use signs: Smoke, sparking, scorching, a melting/burning electrical smell, exposed conductors, electric shock/tingling, or repeated protective-device operation.
