Appliance Repair 101: the vocabulary without unsafe live testing

Understand what a technician or service manual is talking about before deciding what the next safe step should be.

TermPlain-English meaning
ContinuityAn electrical path exists between test points. It does not by itself prove a component works correctly under load.
ResistanceOpposition to electrical current, measured in ohms. Expected values are model/component-specific.
ThermistorTemperature-sensitive resistor used by controls to infer temperature.
RelayElectrically controlled switch used to turn loads on/off.
SolenoidElectromagnetic actuator used in valves, locks and other mechanisms.
InverterPower electronics that can control motor/compressor speed.
HarnessBundle of wires/connectors linking components.
InterlockSafety/control device that prevents operation unless required conditions are met.
SumpLow collection area where water gathers before recirculation/draining.
ImpellerRotating part that moves water or air in a pump/fan.
DefrostControlled removal of frost/ice from a refrigeration evaporator.
Sealed systemClosed refrigerant circuit containing compressor, tubing and heat exchangers.

A diagnostic mindset

  • Start with the symptom and exact model.
  • Separate the affected system from the assumed failed part.
  • Check installation and user-maintenance items first when the manual allows.
  • Use error codes as clues, not verdicts.
  • Escalate when the task crosses into live electrical, gas, sealed refrigeration, microwave high-voltage or significant disassembly.
Knowing a term is not the same as being qualified to test it: This section explains language; it intentionally does not provide live-circuit test instructions.
