How appliance error codes are structured

Codes look compact, but their meaning depends heavily on brand, appliance type, model family and market.

Why error codes are not universal

Manufacturers create their own code systems, and the same characters can represent different faults on different product families. Even within one brand, a code may change meaning between appliance types, markets or generations.

Common patterns

  • Single letters + numbers such as E15 or F10 often identify a fault family and sub-code.
  • Two-letter codes such as OE, IE or UE may be mnemonic or brand-specific—not universal abbreviations.
  • Compound codes such as F9E1 often encode a primary and secondary fault category.
  • Look-alike characters matter: 0/O, 1/I, 5/S and b/6 can be misread from segmented displays.
  • Aliases can exist when a manufacturer changes display conventions across generations.

The safest way to identify a code

  • Record the complete displayed code exactly, including dashes or alternating screens.
  • Confirm brand and appliance type.
  • Find the full model number.
  • Use manufacturer documentation or a model-specific support page where available.
  • Treat a generic web match as provisional until the model context agrees.
Important: Never assume that a familiar-looking code means the same thing on another brand or appliance category.
