How a Washing Machine Works
A system-level explanation designed to make error codes and symptoms easier to understand.
Normal operating sequence
1. FillThe control requests water through one or more inlet valves. A level/pressure sensing system helps determine when the target water level has been reached.
2. Wash or tumbleA motor rotates or agitates the load. The control may reverse direction and change speed depending on programme and load.
3. Heat where applicableMany European/UK machines heat water internally. Other machines rely more heavily on the household hot-water supply. Model design matters.
4. DrainA drain pump moves water out through the drain hose. A blocked filter, hose restriction or pump problem can produce drain-related symptoms.
5. SpinBefore high-speed spin, the machine may redistribute the load. Door/lid locking, balance sensing and water-level confirmation are common prerequisites.
