What to do when you buy a new appliance

A five-minute record on day one can make recalls, parts, warranty and service much easier years later.

Day one: capture the identity

  • Photograph the rating plate/model and serial number.
  • Save the purchase receipt/order confirmation.
  • Save the installation invoice if professionally installed.
  • Record the retailer and delivery/installation date.

Register the appliance

Manufacturer registration can make it easier to receive product-safety/recall communications and manage warranty/service information. Use the manufacturer’s official registration route.

Save the right documents

  • Owner manual.
  • Installation guide.
  • Warranty terms.
  • Energy/efficiency documentation where relevant.
  • Any extended-cover contract.

Start a maintenance record

Record filter cleaning, descaling, water-filter changes, vent cleaning, repairs and recurring symptoms. The site’s My Appliances and Repair History tools can keep a local browser record.
