Product safety

Recall, safety report or safety alert: what is the difference?

The label matters because each type of safety notice can ask consumers to take a different action.

Product recall

A recall applies to identified products already sold and normally asks consumers to take a corrective action such as stopping use, arranging a repair, receiving a replacement or obtaining a refund. Always follow the specific notice.

Product safety report

In the UK OPSS system, a safety report records a specific product safety issue and corrective measures. It may involve actions other than a consumer recall.

Product safety alert

An alert can highlight a broader category or serious risk and may call for immediate action by businesses, authorities or consumers.

Corrective-action programme

Manufacturers may operate repair or modification programmes for affected products. Eligibility can depend on model, serial number and market.

Do not rely on headlines alone: Read the complete official notice and confirm the appliance identifiers before deciding whether your unit is included.
