Refrigeration basics for refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners
Understanding the cooling loop helps separate airflow/defrost issues from true sealed-system faults.
The sealed refrigeration circuit
A compressor circulates refrigerant through condenser, metering device and evaporator. The evaporator absorbs heat; the condenser releases it. This is a closed engineered system.
Airflow matters as much as refrigerant
Many cooling complaints come from blocked vents, dirty user-serviceable condenser areas, failed fans, frost accumulation, door sealing or hot ambient conditions rather than low refrigerant.
Automatic defrost
Frost-free refrigerators and freezers periodically warm the evaporator enough to remove accumulated frost. A defrost-system fault can eventually block airflow even when the compressor still runs.
What owners should not do
- Do not pierce refrigeration tubing.
- Do not add refrigerant based on a generic “not cooling” symptom.
- Do not use open flame/heat on sealed-system tubing.
- Do not defeat covers or protection around fans/compressor electrics.
Sealed-system work is specialist work: Refrigerant handling, leak repair, evacuation, charging and compressor replacement require appropriate equipment, procedures and—in many places—qualified personnel.
