Refrigerator Runs a Long Time: Normal or a Problem?

Long compressor/fan run times can be normal after installation, large grocery loads, frequent door opening, hot weather or temperature changes.

Often normal when

  • Temperature reaches and maintains target.
  • Door seals close properly and vents are clear.
  • Run time reduces after the heavy load/heat condition passes.

Investigate when

  • Food temperatures remain too warm.
  • Heavy frost blocks airflow.
  • Door does not seal or cabinet is poorly ventilated.
  • Compressor repeatedly clicks off/on or surfaces overheat.
Use your exact manual: Manufacturers intentionally program different pauses, fans, anti-crease periods and cooling behaviour. Model documentation is the final reference.
