What does that appliance smell mean?
Some odours are hygiene/maintenance issues; others are immediate stop-use warnings.
Stop-use
Burning / hot-plastic smell
Treat new or strong burning smells as a safety issue, especially with smoke, heat or electrical symptoms.
LaundryMusty washer smell
Biofilm, trapped moisture, detergent residue and drainage can contribute.
DishwasherDishwasher odour
Food debris, filters, standing water, drain routing and infrequent hot cycles can contribute.
RefrigerationRefrigerator odour
Food spills, drain pans, stagnant water/ice and spoiled contents are common starting points.
Stop use immediately for: Smoke, visible sparking, melting insulation, an electrical burning smell that persists, or a gas/fuel smell. Isolate the appliance only if it is safe to do so and follow emergency/manufacturer guidance.
