Burning Smell From an Appliance
A new, strong or persistent burning smell can indicate overheating, electrical damage, friction, debris contacting a hot surface or a failing component.
Stop-use triggers
- Visible smoke or sparking.
- Plug, socket, cable or appliance surface becoming unusually hot.
- Repeated breaker/RCD/GFCI operation.
- Melting, scorching or acrid electrical-plastic smell.
- Gas/fuel smell on a gas appliance.
What to do next
Do not repeatedly reset protection or keep operating the appliance to see whether the smell clears. Disconnect/switch off only if safe, ventilate as appropriate, and use qualified service/emergency guidance.
